Day 7 & 8 Osoyoos

Last night while we were sitting by the lake a few ducks swam up to our beach. Karen started feeding them and before you know it we were knee deep in ducks, they were quite tame, even bossy! I managed to grab one quite easily.

This morning we read the paper by the lake then headed off to see a winery we had passed on our way here. It is called the Golden Beaver Winery, the meaning of the name was not clear, I thought maybe the owner had a blond wife. The wine was not the greatest but we bought a bottle because the label is cute.

Our RV park is on the edge of a desert and they warn of rattlesnakes but we haven't seen any.

Days 6 and 7 Oliver and Osoyoos

I have had trouble getting a reliable wifi signal in Osoyoos so have not been able to post for a day or 2. I now have a separate wireless internet adapter that Henk told me about. I have it mounted on a 4 ft pole zap strapped to the awning support. It seems to be working. My signal is stronger now.

We left Penticton on Sunday morning and drove south to Oliver. We stopped at the Silver Sage winery that Karen's sister had told us about. It was very good and we bought 3 bottles of wine.Would have bought more but it was pricey.

After we left we stopped at the Burrowing Owl Winery because we heard they had a nice restaurant. It was a great lunch with a spectacular view over the miles of vineyards in the valley below.

We saw the old homestead on the way south as well as the horses and turtle crossing.

Arrived at NK'MIP rv park in Osoyoos about 3pm and got set up at a nice site right on the lake. It was hot but windy so it was quite comfortable. We will stay 2 or 3 nights, depending on the weather. After that we will head south again into Washington on our way to the Grand Coulee Dam.

Day 5 Wrights Beach Camp Penticton

We spent the morning canning the peaches we bought in Keremeos. I had to run out and get more jars because we had ran out. We can now supply Vancouver Island with peaches!
After lunch we enjoyed a sunny afternoon on the beach.

We met a nice couple from The Netherlands, Henk and Thea. They are traveling with their dog,Roxy, who came with them on the plane .They had their motor home shipped from home to New York and are now touring the continent. We hope they stop and visit us when they get to the Island.

We will leave tomorrow for Osoyoos. the weather has been fine, sun and cloud mixed.

Day 4 Penticton

We headed out after breakfast for Naramata. It's a nice drive through orchards and vineyards. I was amazed at the number of wineries. They outnumber the orchards now.

We found the tiny Naramata Museum, it was closed but luckily the lady who runs it showed up while we were looking around and let us in. she was very happy to get my mothers memoirs. she is a Naramata native and new mom's family history. They had old photos on display and we saw mom and her sisters in their school photos from the early 20's.
She gave us a couple of booklets about Naramata and thanked us many times for coming , so that was nice.

We drove back to Penticton for lunch then went up the other side of the lake to Summerland.
We were looking for the Kettle Valley Railroad Society. They operate a steam train from there.
My dad had written a journal of his days working for the KVR in the 40's and we wanted to drop a copy off. The train wasn't running today but there was a lady there who was a member of the Society and she was happy to take the journal.

Our work done , we stopped at the Summerland Fall Fair. Lots of home baking and vegetable growing competitions. A real old fashioned fair.

Arrived back at the trailer about 3:30 and set about writing this blog. The internet connection is very weak so my posts don't always go through, then I have to start all over again.

Tomorrow we will hang and enjoy the beach and can the peaches we bought in Keremeos.

Day 3 Hedley to Penticton

We hooked up the trailer after breakfast and headed up the road to Penticton.
We were sorry to leave, it's such a pretty place.

We stopped in Keremeos again and bought some produce then made the hop to our next destination, Wright's Beach Camp, in Penticton. It's a nice place, right on Skaha Lake. we are about 20 ft from the water.

After setting up we headed in for a quick tour of my old home town. Many changes in the 30 yrs since I was last here! More traffic and loads of stores, makes Nanaimo look good, and it's not even tourist season.

Checked out my Grannies old home site but the house is gone, replaced with apartments.

We returned to the trailer to enjoy the sun. Later made nice dinner of rack of lamb and toasted our 37th anniversary with a glass of Okanagan Valley wine.

Tomorrow we will drive to Naramata where my Mom grew up. She wrote a memoir of her childhood years and the lady that runs the museum and Historical Society was looking forward to seeing it.

Day 2 Hedley and Keremeos

So nice to wake up to the sight of the clear green river out the window.

Had a good nights sleep but a little chilly, heard it was -1 in Princeton last night and thats not far away.

After breakfast we drove to Hedley to look around, didn't take long, it's very small. We then went to Keremeos with all of it's fruit stands and bought a box of peaches. Karen brought her canning pot and we will can them in day or two.

Enjoyed the scenery, tall mountain faces and dry hillsides.

We returned to the RV park and enjoyed a lunch of fresh tomato sandwiches.
While we were eating we watched our camping neighbor flyfishing on the river.

He never caught anything but it looked like fun so when he came back I decided to give it a try[I didn't want any witnesses]. I never caught anything either but was lucky not to lose an eye or an earlobe. It's been 25 yrs since I last attempted flyfishing!

After a relaxing afternoon we had curried chicken for dinner.

Tomorrow we will drive to Penticton, we hope the weather is warmer, would like a swim in the lake.

The pictures are: Downtown Hedley, Keremeos Harvest ,Mickey overlooking the river, and championship flyfisher!

Day 1 Riverhaven RV Park Hedley

Hi everyone:
Here we go with another Conway vacation story. For those of you not familiar with us, the Conways going on vacation is very similar to the Chevy Chase movie "Family Vacation and we are affectiontly known amongst our friends as the "Griswolds". Just a couple of incidents, like the sewer hose dangling off the back of our trailer while entering Victoria, trying to drive away with our stabilizers still down, driving down the freeway in Vancouver with the trailer door flapping, and people assume we don't know what we are doing. At least we have never had the dog tied to the bumper!!
So the first day of our holiday was supposed to start with getting the 7:45am ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver. The night before we were all packed and ready to rumble at 6:30am ti catch the ferry.
But Stephen came home from his job at Starbucks at 12:30am and we heard him enter the house then leave again. Back about 1am, John got up to see what was happening. Seems he couldn't find his wallet and had no idea where it was at. He went back to work to look, but couldn't find it. He then proceeded to look everywhere in the house, his bedroom and his car. Still no wallet! John and I were up trying to help him. He called and cancelled his bank and credit cards. After some thought, we thought that maybe he had left his wallet at Aviva's the previous night when the gang got together for dinner and tv. So he texted her and we finally got to bed again about 2am.
With little sleep we made the ferry and got to Vancouver
about 10am and headed out. The plan is to spend 2 nights in Hedley, then 4 nights in Penticton, a few nights in Osoyoos and head down into the US to Washington State. See the Grand Coulee Dam, Leavenworth, and various Pacific Northwest areas.
We made Hedley by 4pm today. Everything was uneventful. Stopped for lunch at a truck stop called Gloria's Diner in Chilliwack. Great burgers and homemade fries. Frank and Sue Higgins were travelling with us in their 5th wheel. They headed up to Merritt area for a few nights and we may meet up with them again in Osoyoos and travel with them for awhile.
The picture is of our spot at the RiverHaven RV Park in Hedley. Pretty little place, we back right onto the Similkameen River. John is going to try fishing tomorrow and we will check out the local sights.
Log in again tomorrow to see how we are doing.
